Chimpanseepolitie?

Tijdschrift PROCES, Aflevering 6 2020
Trefwoorden mens-diervergelijking, politie, chimpansee, gedragsonderzoek
Auteurs Prof. dr. Otto Adang
SamenvattingAuteursinformatie

People like to make comparisons between humans and other animals when they think a comparison helps them to make a point (e.g. that some human behavior can or cannot be considered to be ‘natural’) or to have a laugh when animals act in ways that are seen as funny or cute. There are a lot of misunderstandings about the feasibility of these kinds of comparisons and this chapter deals with the way in which meaningful use can be made of studies into animal behavior, using research into chimpanzee behavior (and specifically research into chimpanzee conflict regulation) as an example. The conclusion is that there are three ways in which ethological studies into non-human animal behavior can be relevant for an increased understanding of human behavior: by using ethological methods of systematic observation, by asking relevant research questions and by generating new hypotheses.

Het criminele verleden van het Nederlandse kickboksen

Tijdschrift PROCES, Aflevering 3 2019
Trefwoorden Kickboksen, Verknoping criminaliteit, Penoze
Auteurs Dr. Frank van Gemert
SamenvattingAuteursinformatie

In the early years of kickboxing in the Netherlands, a number of fighters got involved in criminal activities. Literature typically focusses on social learning, but as the inner city of Amsterdam in the eighties provides a specific setting, this article particularly describes a historical process. In the qualitative data from interviews, observations, and various documents, three questions: Who were these kickboxers? Where did they enter the criminal circles? Why did they go along with what happened there? It turns out, successful fighters easily came in contact with people from the underground, as they met in the gyms and in the night life where many fighters worked as bouncers. In a friendly atmosphere, the risks of seduction were hard to recognize for inexperienced fighters.

‘Trots’, ‘eer’ en ‘medeplichtigheid’: de Vrije Universiteit en Zuid-Afrika

Tijdschrift PROCES, Aflevering 6 2014
Trefwoorden Zuid-Afrika, Medeplichtigheid, trots, Vrije Universiteit
Auteurs Harry Wels
SamenvattingAuteursinformatie

‘Pride’ and ‘honour’ are two concepts that are closely related and in the context of South Africa, are often based on a history of violent battles between various groups in society. VU University Amsterdam has lifelong relations with the historically Afrikaner universities in South Africa. During the Apartheid years the Afrikaner universities scientifically legitimized many of the apartheid policies and practices. In that sense VU University Amsterdam, through its relations to South African counterparts, may be considered complicit with the policies and practices of the Apartheid regime. Consequently, there seems little reason for pride and honour, but rather shame about having sided with academic partners who have at least passively supported the regime? Starting with an explicit acknowledgement of this complicity, the oeuvre of former Archbishop Desmond Tutu may open a path of hope for VUA to contribute to mending past injustices and by, together with its South African academic partners, working towards equality and building new relations in the present South African society.

Politiecultuur: een empirische verkenning in de Nederlandse context

Tijdschrift PROCES, Aflevering 4 2011
Trefwoorden police, police culture, police style, stress factors
Auteurs Prof.dr.ir. Jan Terpstra en Dorian Schaap
SamenvattingAuteursinformatie

To what extent have the Dutch police a distinct culture that corresponds with the image of police culture as it has been described in American studies of the 1960s and 1970s? A survey among 260 police officers shows that the Dutch police culture has a strong emphasis on mission, action, and cynicism. Other well-known elements, like conservatism and machismo proved to be less important. In accordance with the stress-coping theory police culture proved to be stronger if police officers were confronted with internal and external stress. Police culture is positively related with a crime fighting police style, and negatively with a service/guardian style. No relations could be found with a professional police style.
