Since society was secularized, the values of democracy based on the rule of law seem to have the best (potential) binding force for social cohesion. These values are linked to Christianity however. Het ambt van gouverneur van de Caribische landen van het Koninkrijk is één en ondeelbaar, maar de gouverneur is tegelijk landsorgaan én koninkrijksorgaan. De positie en de verantwoordelijkheden van de gouverneur als landsorgaan verschillen van die van koninkrijksorgaan, maar het object van bemoeienis en de wijze waarop beide rollen worden vervuld verschillen niet zo veel van elkaar. De belangrijkste vraag is wanneer en onder welke condities de gouverneur van rol wisselt. Het is van belang dat de gouverneur de regie daarover zo veel mogelijk in eigen hand houdt. Een aanwijzing door de koninkrijksregering kan daarbij een nuttige rol vervullen en de gouverneur een steuntje in de rug geven.

De komst van volledig zelfrijdende auto’s roept veel juridische problemen op. Aan de hand van een scenario wordt onderzocht welke vragen van aansprakelijkheid rijzen en hoe deze dienen te worden beantwoord. De nadruk zal daarbij liggen op de productaansprakelijkheid. Daarbij zal de auteur in hoofdzaak putten uit haar recent afgeronde promotieonderzoek.

In the Netherlands a large number of households is overindebted. Despite the economic prosperity, 20% of the households has to deal with large debts. Dissatisfaction with the position of debtors has grown in recent years. Numerous initiatives are being launched to improve their position. New legislation is provided for and municipalities are starting up all kinds of pilots. There is momentum for improvement. It is important that all initiatives are coordinated. In addition, it is also important to investigate what the legislation and initiatives yield.

This contribution reports about a research in a medium-sized municipality on the possibilities of giving municipalities an instrument to determine at the earliest possible stage which neighborhoods are at (increased) risk of exposure to organized crime and its consequences. We are searching for indicators to measure that exposure to give direction to preventive measures. Our focus is on the erosion of structures and foundations of society as a result of activities of organized crime, eventually resulting in the infringement of the rule of law. It is therefore not about the phenomenon of organized crime itself, but about its effects on society. This requires clarification and measurability of the concept. In this first exploration, we focus on the following five manifestations of the effect of organized crime: The emergence of a subculture: not recognizing government authority; the emergence of takeover of power in the neighborhood; the emergence of vulnerable groups of citizens; the creation of the image: crime pays off; and the emergence of unfair competition.
